Staying Safe

Why Do Kids Get Bullied?

A good number of kids are chosen to be bullied because of the way they present themselves.

Something about their posture told the bully, “here is a weak person, I can take him or her.” If you have low self-esteem or are scared, it will show.

Of course reading The Eye of the Storm will help you to further understand how to overcome fear and present yourself with power.

Low self esteem or fearfulness shows itself as slouched shoulders; head down, arms folded in front or in pockets.

Staying safe requires looking confident: walking tall with your spine straight, shoulders back naturally, chin slightly up, eye to eye contact, arms loose at your side.

Studies show that those trained in martial arts are less likely to ever be attacked because of the way they carry themselves. They’ve been trained to defend themselves and to not take a weak position. They have confidence.

But what if you are not a martial artist? Can you still be safe? Of course.

Try this experiment. The next time you’re in school walk past all the students and teachers and look them directly in the eyes. You might want to smile a little and say “Hi, Mr. So and So” or “Hi there!” or simply offer a friendly nod and a smile.

You’ll be amazed at the friendly responses you get! Also notice the number of students who will not look at you. That shows they are not self-confident. You can do them a big favour by giving them this website address!

By you looking at people, you’re communicating that you are not afraid. You’re not sending clues that you lack confidence. To get into the practice of always looking people in the eyes, take it one step further and see what color eyes they have. It only takes a quick glance. This is also great exercise to help you write stories and draw.

We’ll get into that more in the Beyond the Storm Members area. You’ll be doing character sketches and story boards to make your very own stories. It’s going to be so much fun!

What Staying Safe Looks Like

In staying safe take your hands out of your pockets when you walk. Uncross your arms that are locked across your chest. Not only does it look stronger and friendlier to have open arms, it’s safer.

Should the need arise that you need to fend off a bully, you’re going to need your arms to free yourself. It is too easy for someone to come up from behind you and grab you if your arms are tucked neatly away? Don’t make it easy!

“But I AM scared,” you may confess. There are two things you can do about that. One is take some martial arts classes and learn how to be more confident.

The next is to acknowledge your fear and move through it like our hero Johnny must do in The Eye of the Storm. Movement or action inspires confidence. You will feel much more secure if you...

Use Confident Body Language for Staying Safe

Head up

Shoulders Back

Arms Loose at your sides

Look into people's eyes

With the above four actions you’re giving the message that you are not a weak.

Do not think you’re weak if you are afraid. Every one of us feels afraid sometimes. The fact is fear is good. Fear prevents us from crossing a busy road without looking both ways, or going through a dark park alone at night, or getting into cars with strangers.

Staying safe requires fear. But when fear makes us freeze it becomes a harmful. Movement through fear is the key to staying safe.

It all comes down to what Washi in The Eye of the Storm says to his friends when they are in trouble, “DO SOMETHING!”

When ever you feel fear you must take some action.
