Testimonials Brad, Duncan and "The Eye of the Storm"

...from Teachers, Leaders, and the Ultimate Authority of Children's Books: Children!

May 30 2007

Hi Brad,

I wanted to thank you and Duncan again for coming out. It was amazing how you had all of them so enthralled for so long.:)

I have heard reports of mass reading since they got a hold of their books.

Lets see Sarah, who doesn't show much interest in reading usually won't put the book down (I was talking to her mother last night), Andrew is enjoying his copy (saw him at the studio as he came in for his class), and Aidan who won't read ANYTHING unless forced to has read the first three chapters of his own volition (he asked about some of the words, but he was reading on his own without being told).

Looks like we might have 2 more sections wanting a visit in the Fall based on the rave reviews of the Cubs whose parents lead those sections. Beavers is interested (5-7 years), Scouts is interested, and I'll be at that section in the Fall (11-13 years), and Venturers (14-18) has expressed interest but never gotten back to me. I'm also trying to line up my son's school.

Keep up the good work,

Jim Millington

Dear Brad and Duncan,

Just a quick note to thank you for your visit to our school last month. It was very exciting for the students to meet and have the opportunity to talk to an author and illustrator. Your presentation peaked their interest and rekindled their passion for books and storytelling.

I have been reading your story to my class and they always look forward to it. It is well written with rich vocabulary and description which is an excellent model to share with students during read alouds. The message is positive and motivating and most importantly, they can identify with its characters.

Thank you again for an excellent presentation. Your enthusiasm was motivating (my colleagues and I were impressed with your ability to engage the students and promote confidence) and your message was a positive and valuable one. They especially enjoyed the drawing exercise led by Duncan.

We wish you both much success in your future endeavours.

Keep writing!

Here you will find the first round of testimonials for the action packed story The Eye of the Storm. Hutchinson and Seton teamed up to bridge the gap between picture books and straight prose books. The results were beyond expectation.

"Our goal was to create deep and lasting lessons for children that will carry them into their adult lives," says Hutchinson. "Difficult-to-understand concepts such as Self-Esteem, Teamwork, Responsibility...etc. are best delivered in a story format so children can then see those important attributes in action."

Hutchinson says credit for the positive affect on the students should go to Kim Johnston. She delivered this story to her grade six class with enthusiasm and energy (as is noted by some of the kids in the letters).

She then asked her class if they wanted write to the author and illustrator on what they thought of the story. They also chose to make thumbnail sketches of their interpretation of the chapters. All of this engaged them in a way that reinforced the messages of the story.

It is important to say here that these children were not graded on this. It was not an assignment. They took on this project with enthusiasm and joy; outside of their regular class responsibilities.

Hutchinson and Seton have been working with children for many years—Hutchinson in the martial arts and Seton in the visual arts—and their experience shows. The letters written by the children show clearly that they have struck a cord and moved them in a positive way.

Hutchinson and Seton, too, have been inspired by the results. They are currently in the early stages of putting together a package that teachers can use in their classrooms as a tool to help children understand and raise their self-esteem.

Scan through the many letters from these children and see for yourself. How important are these lessons for children?

"We will be working with teachers to develop products and procedures that inspire independent thinking and action and encourage children to make decisions that better their lives. We will emphasize the importance of high Self-Esteem, Confidence, Teamwork and other important attributes that can arm children for a successful future," says Hutchinson.

It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” --Albert Einstein
